Grades 4 and 5 made ornaments out of Shrinky Dink. Shrinky Dink is a special paper that shrinks down to 1/3 it's original size when cooked while it also becomes 8 times thicker! The final effect looks similar to glass! Here are some pics of the grade 4 present ornaments that incorporated their study of line. Grade 5 designed classic Christmas balls using shading. The students in grade 6 were lucky enough to once again collaborate with the quilting guild. Each student was able to complete a quilted framed initial within a single session! Clearly, they did not forget all that they learnt about quilting in the previous year. Thank you so much Ti Seymour for bringing in many volunteers to help with this project. The students were delighted to see familiar faces that had taught them how to quilt when they were in grade 5. It was a wonderful activity enjoyed by all!
I realized I didn't post one of my favourite projects that grade 5 completed earlier this year. It's a project that gives a glimpse into the students' best summer memories!
Theme: Identity (Term 1) The first step to introduce children to computer science is to participate in the Hour of Code, the largest learning campaign in history. In one hour, students (and teachers) can learn that computer science is fun, easy, and accessible at all ages. Sherwood students in grade 4, 5 & 6 have all joined the movement! Check out more info on the hour of code: https://hourofcode.com/ca Grade 6 does the Hour of Code!Grade 5 does the Hour of Code! Here are some pics of the grades 5 & 6 students participating in the hour of code using Ipads. They worked in teams to solve Minecraft or Anna & Elsa coding challenges. Many groups were able to complete all the the puzzles within the hour!
In continuing with our identity theme, grade 5 students were inspired by Alfred Hitchcock this Halloween. They used their own profile to create spooky scenes reminiscent of the famous television show "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".
Theme: Identity (Term 1) Grade 4 created these peace signs after reading "Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion" by Jane Barclay.
Grade 6 used both oil and chalk pastel to create close-up versions of a poppy. We used warm colours on the poppy and cool colours for the background. Students were able to choose if they wanted to use chalk or oil for the poppy. Depending on their choice they had to use the opposite pastel type for the background.
Theme: Identity (Term 1) After reading the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae the grade 5 students beautifully captured the essence of poem in a visual way. We used the horizon line in order to differentiate poppy size in the foreground vs. background. We are so pleased by all of the compliments we have received!
Grade 4 created the poppies on the side of the bulletin by tearing red and black construction paper. Theme: Identity (Term 1) In grade 6 we discussed how Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico coinciding with our celebration of Halloween. We focused on the decorative elements used with sugar skulls and incorporated those elements into our own self-portraits. Dia de los Muertos lives at Sherwood!
Theme: Identity (Term 1) The grade 5 students created amazing "All About Me" portraits using the ipad. They used the app WordFoto in order to create photos that truly describe who they are.
